How to Rotate a Scanned PDF and Save It That Way

You scanned a document and half the pages are sideways. You rotated them in your viewer, sent the file, and the recipient got them sideways again. That's because rotating in a viewer isn't saved in the file. Here's how to rotate so it sticks.

Why scans come out sideways

Scanners and scanning apps guess which way is up from the page shape or the text. The guess fails in a few common situations:

Rotating the view vs. rotating the file

Acrobat Reader, browsers and your computer's preview app all have a rotate button. In most cases it only changes what you see right now. The file itself doesn't change, and anyone who opens it sees the page sideways. For the change to last, the page has to be rotated in the file.

How to rotate and save

  1. Open Rotate PDF and upload the file.
  2. Pick a direction. Text reading bottom to top needs 90° clockwise. Text reading top to bottom needs 90° counter-clockwise. An upside-down page needs 180°.
  3. If only some pages are sideways, list them in the pages field, like 2,5. If they all are, leave it empty.
  4. Download and open to check.

Different pages, different directions

Sometimes page 2 needs to turn right and page 4 left. Do it in two rounds: rotate page 2, download, upload the result and rotate page 4.

Why it matters beyond looks

Preventing it next time

When photographing documents with your phone, lock screen rotation and hold the phone upright. With a sheet-fed scanner, insert all pages the same way, usually top edge first. The guide to scanning with your phone covers shooting technique.
