How to Turn a Bank Statement PDF into an Excel Spreadsheet

Need to total your expenses for an accountant, build a budget, or find every charge from a particular subscription? When transactions are stuck in a PDF, every calculation means typing by hand. Converting to Excel turns it into a few minutes of sorting and filtering.

Where to get the PDF

Bank and credit card websites and apps usually let you generate a statement for a period as a PDF. Check whether there's also an option to export straight to Excel. If there is, use it. If you only have a PDF, or you received the file from someone else, converting is the way.

Important: use a PDF downloaded from the website, not a scan or a screenshot. A downloaded file contains real text, so tables are extracted accurately. A scan contains only an image.

How to convert

  1. If the file is password-protected, remove the password first with Unlock PDF.
  2. Open PDF to Excel and upload the file.
  3. Download the Excel file. Each table will be on its own sheet, named after its page.

Security

A bank statement is one of the most sensitive documents you have. When you're done, delete extra copies from your downloads folder. If you're sending the file to someone, consider hiding irrelevant transactions, with help from the guide to hiding personal details.
