Transcribe a WhatsApp voice message to text
Got a five-minute voice note and no way to listen right now? Save it from WhatsApp, upload it here and read it in seconds. Works on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web, in Hebrew and other languages, with nothing to install.
Files are processed on our server and deleted automatically after one hour.
How to save a WhatsApp voice message
This is the only slightly confusing part, and each device does it differently:
On Android
- In the chat, long-press the voice message.
- In the three-dot menu (⋮) choose Share, and save it to Files or Google Drive.
- Pick the saved file here.
Another way: voice messages you've played are already on the phone. On most recent devices they're in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes, split into folders by week. The latest message is usually the newest file in the latest folder.
On iPhone
- Long-press the voice message and choose Forward.
- Tap the share icon in the corner and choose Save to Files.
- Pick the file here from the Files app.
On a computer (WhatsApp Web or the desktop app)
Hover over the message, open the small arrow in the corner and choose Download. The file goes to your Downloads folder.
When it's useful
- You're in a meeting, on a bus or next to a sleeping baby and can't listen.
- Long messages with details: an address, a time, a shopping list or instructions are easy to find in text without replaying the whole message.
- Someone at home who is hard of hearing can read messages instead of listening to them.
- Keeping a record: a message from a landlord, a contractor or a client, saved as text with a date so it's easy to find later.
A message in another language?
Choose the spoken language, for example Arabic or Russian, and you get the text in that language. To read it in another language, save the transcript as a Word document, turn it into a PDF with Word to PDF and translate it with Translate PDF.
Long recordings
A call, lecture or meeting recording of up to 60 minutes goes through Transcribe audio, which can also give you video subtitles (SRT).
How it works
Save the voice message
Android: long-press it, then ⋮ → Share or save. iPhone: long-press → Forward → the share icon → Save to Files. Computer: download it from WhatsApp Web.
Upload it here
WhatsApp voice messages are .opus files. They are accepted as they are, no converting needed.
Read the text
A short message takes a few seconds. Copy the text, search it, or keep it as a Word document.
Frequently asked questions
Doesn't WhatsApp transcribe voice messages itself?
Partly. On Android, WhatsApp's own transcripts support only a short list of languages, and at the time of writing Hebrew isn't one of them. On iPhone the list is longer and includes Hebrew from iOS 17. This tool works on any phone or computer, in any of the listed languages, and gives you the text as a file you can keep or send.
Can I transcribe several voice messages?
Yes, one at a time, up to 5 files an hour. For a long conversation sent as many short messages, save each one and transcribe them in order.
How accurate is it?
A clear voice note from one person comes out very accurate. Background noise, a car or wind, and slang lower the accuracy, so check names and numbers.
Is it really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no app and no payment screen. The site is funded by ads.
What happens to the recording?
It is sent to a speech-recognition service to be transcribed, and the files are deleted from our server after one hour. Nothing is posted back to WhatsApp.
